Delta Academy - Tampa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta

Delta Academy

The Tampa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. proudly sponsors an initiative for girls ages 11-14, which began over 10 years ago. The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, a national sorority initiative, is a free program for middle school girls to help them succeed in the areas of math, science, and technology. Studies show that during the middle school years, many girls will lose interest in math and science. The program is designed to show the participants that math, science, and technology can be fun. The goal is to encourage the young ladies to pursue higher education and ultimately attain non-traditional careers for women. The girls are not only engaged in FCAT preparation and hands-on science experiments, but they are also involved in technology, reading and self-esteem sessions, cultural field trips, college tours, and many other exciting activities. Previous Delta Academy activities have included TechPlayzone, USF Engineering Expo, International Day of Service Events, Performance Art Center, Step Afrika, an Overnight Adventure at the Kennedy Space Center, corporate tours of TECO and WTMP, attending the Zora Neal Hurston Festival in Eatonville, an overnight camping experience, USF Engineering Expo, Bodies...The Exhibition at MOSI, college campus tours, and an annual Career Expo. The Career Expo has won a National and Regional Awards for outstanding programming and planning. The Career Expo is usually held during the month of May and is open to the public.
