The Physical and Mental Health Committee encourages behavioral lifestyle changes for the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of African-American families. The three-pronged approach to the “Journey to Wellness” includes: 1) A refocused “Lose to Win!” to include Physical Activity, and Healthy Eating; 2) Physical Health: Chronic Disease; and 3) Mental Health. (PPD 2010-2013)

The Tampa Alumnae Chapter’s purpose is to develop and coordinate community programs designed to eradicate inequities in the area of physical and mental health. Our mission is to educate the Tampa Bay community at large regarding health issues and or risk factors relative to identified physical health, i.e. diabetes, cancer, obesity, and mental health i.e. anxiety and depression, issues.

Goals

1)  Bring local and national diabetes prevention advocates to the Tampa Bay area to educate the community about the risk factors of diabetes and increase awareness of preventive measures;

2)  Develop programs designed to address childhood obesity;

3)  Increase community awareness regarding risk factors for cancer, diabetes, hypertension, etc.;

4)  Increase community awareness regarding warning signs of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, etc.
