DELTA GEMS: GROWING AND EMPOWERING MYSELF SUCCESSFULLY
A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Delta GEMS was created to catch the dreams of African-American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:
1. To instill the need to excel academically;
2. To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
3. To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures in high school and beyond; and
4. To create compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.
Delta GEMS Program, (GEMS), the acronym for Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully, was created in 2004 to help African American young women realize their dreams. In 2007, the program was renamed the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble GEMS Institute, honoring Dr. Noble’s memory and her lifelong commitment to promoting academic achievement and excellence.
Tampa Alumnae’s GEMS program meets regularly during the school year. In addition to monthly meetings, the participants regularly participate in community service activities. Each year, the young ladies will receive approximately 20-25 hours of community service hours which can be counted toward the Bright Futures Scholarship Program.
